KPV is a tripeptide — lysine, proline, valine — corresponding to the C-terminal fragment of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). Unlike α-MSH it acts independently of the melanocortin receptors; its anti-inflammatory effect is mediated by uptake through the PepT1 transporter expressed on intestinal epithelial and immune cells.
