Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic analogue of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It is a non-selective agonist of the melanocortin receptors MC1, MC3, MC4 and MC5. MC1 activation drives eumelanin synthesis in melanocytes (the tanning effect); MC4 activation accounts for the appetite suppression and the well-known sexual side effects.
